Orchestral Concert"Extolling Red Flag" Composer: Lu Qiming
This symphony was written in the spring of 1965 and the first performance was held in the Spring of Shanghai music festival in the same year. This work includes three parts under a single theme. The theme represents the splendor of raising the first five-star red flag in Tian-An-Men Square, Beijing, when announcing the establishment of the People's Republic of China in Oct.1, 1949. This work expresses the happiness of the Chinese community standing up.
Orchestral Concert"Prelude of Spring Festival" Composer: Li Huanzhi
Spring Festival is the most important traditional holiday for Chinese people. This work is the first movement of 'Spring Festival Suite' composed by Li Huanzhi. The theme is about a seeding dance. It pictures the happy scene with dancing and gong-drum beating.
Orchestral Concert"Yao's Dance" Composer: Liu Tieshan, Mao Yuan
This work represents the holiday scene of the Yao Nationality. When night comes, people dress up, gather under the moonlight and beat long drums. The violin sound is so soft and smooth that it makes people think there is a pretty girl dancing with the music. Girls begin dancing one by one. People are dancing and singing and the atmosphere gets more and more exciting. Music ends when it reaches the climax.
Concert"The Good News from Beijing" Composer: Zheng Lu, Ma Hongye
This work represents the happy scene of people in remote villages celebrating the good news of China's economic reform, which has been passed from Beijing. At the beginning, the clarion is accompanied by the soft sound of the violin, vividly representing the splendorous scene of the clarion echoing among the mountains. Suddenly the sound gets much more jubilant. People dance themselves into a trance with the jubilant melody and strong rhythm. The whole work is composed of five themes with special dance music and the first theme playing in the whole work. The work from beginning to end is composed with this jubilant melody.
String Concert"Spring Reflecting the Moon" Composer: Hua Yanjun
Huishan Spring in Wuxi, Jiangshu Province is well known as 'the second spring on earth', so the composer named his work accordingly. This work tells us a story about a blind artist who experienced all sadness of life. At night he is feeling the cold moon, facing the smooth spring and thinking about the meaning of life, which has been full of sadness and frustrations.
String Concert"Happy Night" Composer: Liu Tianhua
On New Year's Eve in 1927, the composer stayed with his friends at home. Firecrackers were firing for welcoming the New Year and seeing off the old, and children's happy laugh was adding more happiness for the holiday. So, the composer wrote down this work to express the happy feeling of staying with friends for welcoming the New Year together.
Orchestral Concert"White-Haired Girl"  
'White-Haired Girl' is one of the most famous Chinese ballet dramas. It's transcribed from the Chinese opera bearing the same name. This drama tells us a true story of one tragic family living in the northeast countryside of old China. The instruments are arranged by Chen Xieyang. 'Boreas is Coming' and 'Red String', both in the first act, describe the happy scene of the heroine Xi Er waiting for her father to celebrate the New Year's eve in a evening.
Orchestral Concert"Lan Huahua"  
This music was adapted from a traditional folk song in the north part of Shaanxi Province. The work keeps the original language, praising a brave girl named Lan Huahua breaking feudal formality. The melody is grazioso, absorbing traditional folk music style 'Xintianyou'and upgrading this work's artistic image. This work is an orchestral concert of Chinese folk songs' characteristics.
Orchestral Concert"Happiness for the Sun Rising"  
This work was adapted from a folk song in Sichuan Province. The music is simple and optimistic, expressing children's love of labor work and life in mountain area.
Orchestral Concert"Flowers and the Moon" Composer: Huang Yijun
This is a light music work in the form of trilogy, adapted from Chinese folk music. It starts in allegretto, describing the dancing and singing for happy days of the full moon and beautiful flowers.
Cello Solo"Rocaille Partite" Composer: Tchaikovsky
Tchaikovsky, as a dedication to a Germany cello player, composed this work. The word 'Rocaille' is originally from French, meaning shell shape. During 18th century, the architectural style in France was elegant and delicate. In musical terms, ¡®Rocaille¡¯ was the music style during the transitional period from baroque to classical. Because of the simple theme, clear construction and clear timbre, this kind of music style can fully show the standard of a cello player.
Pai Flute solo"Boat Song in the River Village" Composer: Jiang Guoji
This work is about the beautiful scenery of river villages in South China and the happy scene of celebrating the harvest.
Bending Flute Solo"The Fantasy of Leifeng Pagoda" Composer: Jiang Guoji,Gu Sengan Arranged by: Wang Tianming
The Leifeng Pagoda stands on the hill beside the beautiful West Lake in Hangzhou. Legend has it that a beautiful snake lady was put under the pagoda, which collapsed because of her lover's pleading. The snake lady can stay with her lover in the end. This work adopts the element of Buddhist music.
Bone Flute"Primeval Hunting Picture" Composer: Qian Zhaoxi
This work adopts some simple music language, fully displaying essence of the bone made flute. This work is about the people in the primeval period and how they hunted at night. There is human voice in the music, expressing the excitement of hunting animals.
(Er-Hu) Solo"Departure from a Honeymoon" Composer: Zhang Xiaofeng,Zhu Xiaogu
This work is from a poem written by Du Fu - famous Tang Dynasty poet. During a war time, a husband was forced to leave his wife for conscription just after their marriage. The work is composed of three parts: wedding party, bad news and departure.















Some Special Chinese Folk Instruments
Pai-Flute:
Pai-flute was created by Mr. Zhao Songting a great master of Chinese flutes. He combined flutes of different tones together. While different flutes are played in rotation, the performer can easily expands the range of flutes, enriching the flute timbre.
Bone Flute:
The some bone flutes were discovered in Hemudu, Zhejiang Province, in 1973. According to archeologists, these flutes were made of bird's bone 7000 years ago. The length is about 6-10cm, hollow inside and in a cambered shape. There are 1 to 3 holes on the bulge. The sound is like bird's singing. The bone flute is the earliest flute ever found in China. The bone flute used today is made of chicken's leg bone.
