Established in 1957, Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra has stood in the front row of all provincial orchestras for over 40 years. Zhejiang province is not only one of the most developed provinces but also home to some of the finest arts and artisans for centuries. With both government and local support this orchestra is now the only symphony orchestra in the province.  Over the years there have been joint performances between the Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra and first-class conductors from home and abroad. Chen Xieyang, Zheng Xiaoying, Zhang Guoyong, Tang Muhai, Yu Feng, Huang Yijun, Huang Xiaotong, Fan Chengwu, Shui Lan, Lin Yousheng are a few of the many Chinese conductors worked with them. Conductors from Japan, America, Italy and Australia have made various appearances in their concerts as well. For the past seven years, the Hangzhou New Year Concert presented by the orchestra has been a great example of the wonderful experience for professional musicians and local audience.
Fans from around the Province gathered every year for this celebrating event. Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra focuses on the oriental traditions while presenting the western classics as well.
In recent years the Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra has made efforts on revitalizing traditional Chinese music. Zhejiang province has been a center for the arts in China since 1138 when Hangzhou, the capital of province now, was the capital of Southern Song Dynasty. At that time artists from around the country gathered and formed a unique style of music that still leave its footprints on Zhejiang culture today.  Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra performs many works based on the music created over 800 years ago. Some bone flutes found in a 7000-year old Hemudu Site in the province enhanced the orchestra's research of ancient music. During the orchestra's tours in France, Germany, Korea and Switzerland, the audiences were all deeply impressed with its musical works of Chinese tradition presented in the form of symphony.
